Dental Implants

Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth and also provide a fixed solution to having removable partial or complete dentures. Implants provide excellent support and stability for these dental appliances.

Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth (usually titanium) that are surgically placed into the upper or lower jaw bone by a dentist or Periodontist - a specialist of the gums and supporting bone. The teeth attached to implants are very natural looking and often enhance or restore a patient’s smile!

Dental implants are strong and durable and will last many years. On occasion, they will have to be re-tightened or replaced due to normal wear.

Reasons for dental implants:

  •     Replace one or more missing teeth without affecting adjacent teeth.
  •     Resolve joint pain or bite problems caused by teeth shifting into missing tooth space.
  •     Restore a patient’s confident smile.
  •     Restore chewing, speech, and digestion.
  •     Restore or enhance facial tissues.
  •     Support a bridge or denture, making it more secure and comfortable.

Meet Dr. Patrick Carroll - Oral Surgeon

Dr. Patrick Carroll is an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon with eight years of experience. During his undergraduate studies Dr. Patrick Carroll focused on biology, where he graduated with honors, and earned himself an early admission to the Indiana University School of Dentistry. Upon completing his DDS in the top 10% of his class, Dr. Carroll elected to further develop his talents and complete his residency studying Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Vanderbilt University.

While studying Oral surgery at Vanderbilt, Dr. Carroll would receive heavy exposure to trauma, pathology, anesthesia, and dentoalveolar surgery. His training at Vanderbilt was of paramount importance. Dr. Carroll would act as the chief resident of the facial trauma and reconstruction team where he would further hone his skills.

In his free time, Dr. Carroll enjoys traveling and exploring the corners of Chicago.

Dental Emergencies

Although dental injuries and dental emergencies are often distressing for both children and parents, they are also extremely common. Approximately one third of children have experienced some type of dental trauma, and more have experienced a dental emergency.

There are two peak risk periods for dental trauma - the first being toddlerhood (18-40 months) when environmental exploration begins, and the second being the preadolescent/adolescent period, when sporting injuries become commonplace.

Common Injuries:

  • Toothache
  • Dental avulsion (knocked-out tooth)
  • Dental intrusion (tooth pushed into jawbone)
  • Tooth luxation/extrusion/lateral displacement (tooth displacement)
  • Crown fracture
  • Root fracture
  • Dental concussion
  • Injured cheek, lip or tongue
  • Fractured jaw
  • Head injury/head trauma
